Michael Wheeler, MD is an orthopedic spine surgeon serving patients in the Dallas metroplex area at Texas Orthopaedic Associates. He has offices to see patients in both Dallas and Plano. Dr. Wheeler treats a wide variety of spine conditions using up-to-date technology and minimally invasive techniques. Some of the conditions he treats include spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, disc herniation, sciatica, spondylolisthesis, and other causes of neck and back pain.
Dr. Wheeler grew up in Houston and then moved to Austin, Texas for his undergraduate degree. He graduated with honors from the University of Texas, where he obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance. While in college, he was part of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He then completed his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.
Following graduation from medical school, he completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas, where he became a well-rounded, well-trained orthopaedic surgeon. He ultimately found his passion in the spine.
Dr. Wheeler furthered his training by completing a spine surgery fellowship at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Oregon. During his fellowship year, he had the opportunity to train with one of the most experienced and well-known spine surgeons in the country. Dr. Wheeler has given several presentations and has been published numerous times for research in his field. He is affiliated with several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, North American Spine Society, Texas Medical Association, and American Medical Association.
When Dr. Wheeler is not treating patients, he enjoys spending his time outside – whether he is playing golf or just sitting on a patio with a glass of wine. Some other hobbies include painting, watching documentaries, and cooking. He also enjoys going on long walks through the neighborhood with his wife, Sarah. Dr. Wheeler is known to torture himself by eating the spiciest foods he can find and is a proud Texas Longhorn.
